What is Accutane?

Accutane, also known as isotretinoin, is an acne medication used to treat severe breakouts. Accutane is extremely popular and generally available in generic forms. Developed back in 1982 to combat a nationwide acne breakout, the brand name version of the drug, Accutane, was recalled from the market in June 2009. Manufacturer, Roche Pharmaceuticals, claimed one of the primary reasons for pulling the drug off the market was the cost of defending against litigation. It is estimated that over 16 million people have used or continue to use some variation of the drug.

Following a study by the manufacturer in 1984, high doses of Accutane were prescribed even though independent research on the same subject suggested lower doses were equally as effective. Unfortunately, these high doses of Accutane also put consumers at a much higher health risk, and many serious side effects have been tied to use of Accutane.
