The city of Arlington is located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. It is approximately seven miles northwest of downtown Boston. It was originally settled in 1635 within the boundaries of Cambridge, MA under the name Menotomy, and was incorporated in 1807 as West Cambridge, before changing its name to Arlington in 1867. It was the home of New England’s first mill, established in 1637 by Captain George Cook. Several subsequent mills were built along Mill Brook including the Old Schwamb Mill which continues operating through the present and is the country’s longest continuing operating mill. Paul Revere travelled through Arlington on his famous midnight ride, en route to Lexington. It has a rich colonial war history.
