What is Byetta?
Byetta, also known as exenatide, is a subcutaneous twice daily injection used to fight the effects of Type 2 Diabetes. Approved by the FDA in April of 2005, Byetta has been used by millions of people throughout the United States. There have been many extremely serious and sometimes fatal side effects associated with Byetta, one of which can be fatal pancreatitis which is an inflammation of the pancreas.
A study done in October of 2007 caused the FDA to inform healthcare professionals of at least 30 cases of acute pancreatitis associated with use of Byetta, and in August 2008 a second alert was issued informing the health community of six additional cases of hemorrhagic pancreatitis and necrotizing pancreatitis resulting in at least two deaths.
Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas, as opposed to chronic pancreatitis which can be identified as persistent abdominal pain. Severe pancreatitis cases may require surgery with long term health ramifications. Necrotizing pancreatitis leads to tissue damage, this causes the release of toxins and enzymes into the blood stream which can lead to organ failure and death.
