What is Celebrex?

Celebrex, also referred to as celecoxib, was approved for use by the FDA in December of 1998 and is produced by the large pharmaceutical company Pfizer. Since being approved it is estimated over 20 million people have been prescribed Celebrex.

Celebrex is prescribed to help fight the effects of various forms of arthritis. These include osteoarthritis, or more commonly known as “wear and tear” arthritis, which is a degenerative joint disease common in the elderly. It is also used to fight adult rheumatoid arthritis which is a sever form of arthritis affecting over 2 million people. Celebrex is also used to fight primary dysmennorhea (severe menstrual cramping) and acute pain in adults.

Classified as a COX-2 inhibitor, Celebrex is part of a group of non-sterodial anti-infammatory medications (NSAIDs), and work to block one of the enzymes which case both pain and inflammation.

A study done in August 2001, and released in the Journal of the American Medical Association, first raised concerns about use of Celebrex, as well as Bextra and Vioxx and other drugs of the same variety, and the possible impact on a user’s cardiovascular health.

Side Effects of Celebrex

Celebrex falls into the same class as drug and the discontinued Bextra and Vioxx. Both Bextra and Vioxx were pulled from the United States markets due to safety concerns and adverse side effects associated with the drugs. Soon after the Vioxx recall in September of 2004, a new study was put out linking use of Celebrex to an increased risk of heart attack.
