What is Chantix?

Chantix is a prescription drug, also known as varenicline tartrate, is produced by the Pfizer Company. Chantix acts as a smoking cessation drug designed to help individuals kick their addiction to nicotine. Approved by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May 2006, Chantix was expected to be a commercial success, but problems quickly began to arise about the potential side effects. Since being approved by the FDA, Chantix has taken a place high on the FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System list. This list is designed to identify which drugs are putting patients at the greatest risks.

In January 2008, on the back of an FDA announcement back in 2007, The Pfizer Company stated it was raising the warning level of Chantix in the United States. Back in 2007 the FDA had announced it was going to begin a safety review after reports of intense suicidal thoughts and both aggressive and erratic behavior were linked to use of Chantix.

Chantix works to help adult cigarette smokers quit by stimulating areas of the brain that are receptors to the nicotine. Chantix does not allow nicotine to attach to these receptors and hypothetically makes the urge and temptation of smoking less. However, many difficult side effects have been reported in association with Chantix use. Many consumers have reported that they have experienced nausea, depression, anxiety, vivid dream and heart palpitations.

The initial reports for the FDA stated that individuals are more likely to act erratically or aggressively while using Chantix, and there have also been several reports of fatigue and drowsiness, impacting patients’ ability to operate heavy machinery (driving). Other initial findings of the study show that a new occurrence of depression, suicidal ideation, and severe changes in behavior and emotions can occur just a few days after beginning treatment with Chantix.
