What is Darvon/Darvocet
Darvon is a popular pain medication that has been prescribed to patients across the United States starting in 1957. Darvon is produced by Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals and is an opiod painkiller used to treat mile to moderate amounts of pain. There are studies that suggest that both Darvon and Darvocet are not all that effective in treating pain, some medical professionals say less effective than two aspirin, and the potential health risks outweigh the potential rewards. Darvon and Darvocet contain the drug propoxyphene, and this drug has been linked to many potentially serious side effects. These side effects include dizziness, overdose and death.
Darvon is one of the most popular drugs on the market in the United States. It is estimated that in 2009 over 10 million patients were using this drug in the United States. Darvon is most often prescribed to patients who have completed surgical procedures, and Darvocet is a stronger variety of the drug and combines both propoxyphene and acetaminophen. The FDA received new clinical data that patients were potentially at risk of serious or fatal heart rhythm abnormalities. There have been over 10,000 deaths attributed to the use of either Darvon or Darvocet, and the FDA, and other watch groups such as Public Citizen and Drug Abuse Warning Network, called for them to be pulled from the shelves. After much pressure, Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals agreed to pull Darvon and Darvocet, and the FDA strongly recommended that makers of generic brands of the drug do the same.
Studies have shown that even while taking Darvon within the recommended doses, propoxyphene causes a major change in the electrical activity of the heart. These changes, as seen on electrocardiogram (ECG), increases the risk for a serious abnormal heart rhythm, which has resulted in the sudden death of patients. Patients who have taken Darvon for a long period of time may also still be at serious risk, as these studies have shown that a small change in an individual’s health, as minor as dehydration, can cause an adverse effect at any point.
