What is Dimethylamylamine (DMAA)?

DMAA is a vasoconstrictor and central nervous system stimulant. DMAA acts like an amphetamine in the body and is synthetically produced, yet it is referred to as a “natural” stimulant. This stimulant is used by both weightlifters and individuals seeking to lose weight.

DMAA is also referred to as 1,3-dimethylamine, methylhexanamine or geranium extract/geranainine, and is currently used in over 200 brand-name dietary supplements available in the United States.

Following alarming reports from 42 consumers reporting adverse effects from taking products with DMAA, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took regulatory action. In April 2012, the FDA sent out warning letters to 10 different manufactures and distributors of products with DMAA in them. The letter stated that DMAA could no longer be used as an active ingredient in dietary supplements, and also warned against marketing products in which no safety evidence has ever been submitted.

In December of 2011 the Department of Defense also ordered vendors to halt sale of products containing DMAA on all military bases. This order came following the death of two military service members who had been taking DMAA. DMAA has also been added to the banned substance list of Major League Baseball as well as to the World Anti-Doping Agency. Sale of DMAA is already illegal in both Canada and New Zealand.
