What is Effexor?

Effexor is an anti-depressant drug made by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. While effexor has proven effective in treating depression and anxiety, certain serious side effects can occur. Numbers confirmed by a variety of studies have shown that effexor is especially dangerous for pregnant women, and these side effects can be passed along to their unborn children.

In the generic form Effexor is known as Venlafaxine, and is considered to be a Selectove Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor (SSNRI). It is an antidepressant drug used to tackle major depressive disorders, panic disorders, clinical depression, and anxiety disorders. It is one of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants on the market today.

Side Effects of Effexor

While there has been some success with use of Effexor, many serious side effects have been reported. Some patients have reported that their depression symptoms have been enhanced since beginning the drug due to how the active chemicals affect the brain. It has also been shown that Effexor can cause heart and lung birth defects in newborns, and create significant risk to pregnant women.

Side effects of Effexor have the ability to develop quickly, but several weeks may pass before the drug really manifests itself. Long term use of Effexor can cause more severe side effects, and there is a high risk of severe withdrawal symptoms if the user stops suddenly during a pregnancy.

Additional side effects have also been linked with use of Effexor:

  1. Insomnia
  2. Moodiness
  3. Fatigue
  4. Confusion
  5. Poor Motor Skills
  6. Perfuse Sweating

Speaking with your Doctor

If pregnant, it is advised to always speak with your physician prior to starting Effexor, as it is important to understand the potential side effects and the individual risks they may pose to you.

Effexor Litigation

Most of the litigation surrounding Effexor results from the harmful effects the drug has on both pregnant women and unborn children, but other claims exist which claim the drug worsened the effects of depression. Both medical experts and doctors strongly suggest that pregnant women do not take Effexor in any amount, as pregnant women who have taken even small doses have had serious health problems with their children.

Many individuals have suffered the severe side effects of Effexor use, and they were able to recover due the negligence of Pfizer. Pfizer was aware of these potential side effects and failed to disclose them to the consumers. It is not known whether Pfizer was intentionally hiding information, or did not conduct thorough enough research, but their negligence has caused many injuries, and allowed for many recoveries.
