What is Hydroxycut?
Hydroxycut is a popular over-the-counter dietary supplement that has been marketed as a fat burner, energy enhancer and low-carb aid. Hydroxycut was manufactured and produced by Lovate Health Services, Inc. and sold under the brand names Lovate and MuscleTech. Hydroxycut is made of many different ingredients and herbal extract and also includes both chemicals and metals. There were at least 9 million packages sold last year alone, primarily at grocery stores and pharmacies.
On May 1, 2009 a Hydroxycut recall was issued for 14 of the companies products. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received 23 reports of serious health problems that ranged from jaundice and elevated liver enzymes, all the way to death. Serious side effects had been linked to use of Hydroxycut, even though the manufacturer marketed it as a safe way of losing weight and building muscle. The reports indicated that consumers were developing serious adverse reactions to Hydroxycut that included liver damage, seizures, cardiovascular disorders, rhabdomyolysis and even death. Many of these side effects developed in individuals who did not have any preexisting medical condition that would make liver damage likely. In some cases, discontinuing use of Hydroxycut did properly restore liver functions, but many consumers were not so lucky.
Severe liver injuries were reported even when patients were using Hydroxycut at the recommended doses listed on the bottle, and patients negatively impacted ranged in age from 21 to 51.
