What is Lipitor?
Lipitor, also known as atorvastatin, is a drug used to help manage the cholesterol in the body. Lipitor does this by blocking an enzyme in the liver which causes the body to produce cholesterol. The manufacturer of Lipitor is Pfizer. The higher the dosage the higher the risk to the patient, as well as for those with the classic diabetes risks such as excess weight, high blood sugar, high blood pressure or high triglycerides. A recent study proved that patients who already have diabetic risk factors, half of these individuals developed diabetes once they started using Lipitor.
Lipitor is by and away the best selling cholesterol drug on the market and the drug has 22 million users worldwide. These users began to sue Pfizer, alleging that negative physical side effects, which included; nerve damage, muscle pain, nightmares, memory loss, and a variety of central nervous problems, were not properly described to them when they were prescribed Lipitor. The lawsuits claim that Pfizer failed to warn both doctors and patients of the more serious potential side effects and permanent health risks. The lawsuit alleges that Pfizer was well aware of these potential risks from their own internal trials, but failed to warn the public as it would have severely impacted the sales and profitability of Lipitor.
As reported by “The Common Voice”, sales of Lipitor exceeded $12,000,000,000 in 2005 alone. It is said that Pfizer intentionally engaged in a campaign of misinformation, designed to downplay and cover up Lipitor’s more serious and irreversible side effects.
