What is Mifeprex (RU-486)
Mifeprex, otherwise known as mifepristone and RU-486 is a pill that causes a medically induced abortion up to 7 weeks after getting pregnant. It is an alternative to a surgically induced abortion and blocks a hormone that is required in order to carry on a pregnancy. Mifeprex is manufactured by Danco Laboratories and since FDA approval in September 2000, it is estimated over 460,000 women have taken the pill to end unwanted pregnancies.
To date there have been 637 reported cases of adverse side effects associated with Mifeprex. Many of the cases involved side effects such as hemorrhaging, infections, and deadly cases of septic shock. Altogether there have been 5 reported cases of death caused by septic shock after taking Mifeprex. All of these deaths have been associated with a rare bacterial infection called Clostridium sordellii.
The FDA and various consumer groups put a lot of pressure on the large pharmaceutical company to enhance visibility on the label to show the extreme risks that the drug posed, and Danco Laboratories added a black box warning to Mifeprex and warning consumers that the drug may block the body’s natural glucocorticoid mechanism which suppresses inflammation. This inflammation is the main source which can lead to septic shock followed by death.
The FDA went on to issue an official alert recommending healthcare professionals be aware of atypical symptoms of infection when using the abortion pill Mifeprex. Symptoms associated with this include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, abdominal pain and fever.
