What is Plavix?
Plavix is a drug produced by the pharmaceutical companies Sanofi-Aventis and Bristol-Myer, and they claim that the drug is much more effective in preventing heart attacks than aspirin; however there is no data to back up these claims.
The FDA recently but a “black box” warning on Plavix alerting them those individuals who cannot metabolize the drug may be at a significantly higher risk. Plavix, in theory, is supposed to reduce the risk of heart attack, unstable angina, stroke and cardiovascular deaths by making the platelets less likely to form blood clots. However, these effects do not occur until the drug is metabolized by the liver. Patients who do not have high enough levels of CYP2C19 are unable to metabolize the drug, making it less effective.
Despite pharmaceutical claims that Plavix is more effective than Aspirin, studies have indicated that taking Plavix carries no substantial benefits and increase the risk of serious and potentially fatal side effects for some users.
Plavix Side Effects
Individuals who suffer from high cholesterol or high blood pressure are at twice the risk of suffering a heart attack, stroke, or bleeding while using Plavix. For individuals with a history of gastrointestinal problems, the blood thinner carries a risk that is 12 times higher of recurrent ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding when compared to aspirin. A February 2005 study in the New England Journal of Medicine showed Plavix actually impairs the healing of ulcers and significantly increased the risk of recurrent bleeding. Side effects associated with Plavix include, but are not limited too:
- Internal Bleeding
- Heart Attacks
- Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpora (TTP)
To date, Plavix is the second best selling drug in the world, and at $4 a pill, as compared to a few pennies for aspirin, it is no wonder that the pharmaceutical companies remained quiet on the potentially dangerous and fatal adverse effects. Plavix class action lawsuits claim that Plavix is defective in its design and formulation, there are safer alternatives already on the market, Plavix is unreasonably fit, suitable or safe for the promoted use, and the potential side effects outweigh the benefits.
The pharmaceutical companies have a duty to protect their costumer base and inform them of the harmful and fatal side effects that can be tied to use of their products. Both Sanofi-Aventis and Bristol-Myer have failed to live up to this duty, putting users potentially at great risk. The failure to disclose has resulted in the injury and death of many users of Plavix.
