What is Wellbutrin?

One of the most popular antidepressants on the market is known as Wellbutrin, which has a generic name of bupropion. Wellbutrin is one of the top sellers for large pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline. Normally, antidepressant drugs fall into a category called Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitor (SSRI), however Wellbutrin functions differently.

Wellbutrin is known as a NDRI, and works with the levels of dopamine in the body. Unfortunately, Wellbutrin presents many of the same risks that are known to be associated with SSRI’s.

Wellbutrin and Pregnancy Complications

Studies have proven that women who take Wellbutrin while pregnant are at a much greater risk of having birth defects occur with their babies than women not on Wellbutrin and other antidepressants. According to the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, women who took bupropion (Wellbutrin) were at a significantly greater risk of having a child with a condition known as left outflow tract heart defect.
