What is Zocor?
Zocor is a cholesterol drug which fits into the drug class known as statins. It is prescribed to individuals with high cholesterol when diet and exercise are not enough. Zocor is manufactured by Merck & Co., and it was the second best selling drug and most popular drug worldwide for the company. In 2005, the same year the exclusive patent on Zocor ran out, Merck made over $4,300,000,000 worldwide on sales of Zocor. Since 2002, the FDA has issued warnings about the potential of liver and muscle damage.
In March 2010 the FDA announced new safety warnings in regard to Zocor. They announced a simvastatin warning, which warned patients to the risks of potential muscle damage. The warning stated that no new patient should be given more than 80 mg a day as it could lead to serve muscle injury. Back in 2002 the FDA made its first public warning about the risk of Rhabdomyolysis . This is a very serious disease that if caught early can be treated in patients, however, if left unchecked or diagnosed, leads to acute kidney failure in 30-40% of patients. This creates an extremely dangerous medical situation and can be fatal.
Zocor has also been linked to other serious potential side effects. While Rhabdomyolysis is the riskiest, it can also lead to server kidney damage, kidney failure, and sometimes death. Zocor has also been linked to a risk of increases in major cardiovascular events such as heart attacks, revascularization and cardiovascular death, in those taking doses of more than 80 mg.
