The New England Journal of Medicine recently published a study which linked antidepressant use during the first trimester of pregnancy to birth defects. Since antidepressants are prescribed more than any other drug in America this is a huge cause for concern. The study specifically advised that Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac and Celexa should be avoided when pregnant.
All of these drugs are known as “SSRIs” or Selective Serotonin-Reuptake Inhibitors. SSRI’s have been linked to heart defects, omphalocele, congenital problems, and intestinal defects.
