North End Accident Sends Woman to Hospital: Boston Attorney Doug Sheff “Appalled” by “Obvious Safety Violations”

Boston injury attorney Doug Sheff, Principal of Sheff Law, was contacted by media outlets  for comment regarding a North End construction accident that sent a woman to the hospital with life-threatening injuries on July 25, because it happened across the street from his home.

“This accident, in my own neighborhood, where I live and where I want to feel safe and protected, appalled me at the obvious safety violations,” Sheff said. “This is similar to cases we work all the time.”

Witnesses told The Boston Globe that a woman in her 30s was walking her dog near 84 Atlantic Avenue at 8:38 in the morning when she was struck in the head by a piece of metal that fell from a nearby building. A crane was loading materials onto the roof of a nearby building at the time.

Witnesses noted a missing section of railing on the roof of the five-story building. A man working nearby told CBS Boston he saw the crane hit a section of railing on the roof and knock it loose. Boston police removed a section of fence that was found on the sidewalk later in the morning, and one witness said he saw the railing strike the woman, knocking her to the ground.  “To me, this requires serious and immediate attention,“ Sheff said.

Multiple agencies converged on the scene to investigate, including the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), the Boston Inspectional Services Department and Boston Police homicide detectives.
