Runaway Tire Hits Two Cars on Massachusetts Turnpike

There were frightening moments during the morning commute when two cars were hit by a flying tire on the eastbound side of the Massachusetts Turnpike near the Boston University bridge. The tire then flew off the turnpike and hit a third car on Agganis Way.

All three drivers were unhurt, and Massachusetts State Police are looking for the owner of the tire, which they believe came from a vehicle heading westbound on the turnpike.

The case is a reminder of one of the unexpected dangers of road travel. Drivers are generally on the lookout for hazards posed by other drivers, but can easily be caught off guard by debris dropped from overpasses or that comes loose from other vehicles.

Sheff Law earned a $6,000,000 settlement in a similar case, when a New Jersey woman was hit in the head by a flying tire on the New Jersey Turnpike. Our client unfortunately suffered profound brain damage due to the accident. A subsequent investigation revealed that the tire had been installed incorrectly and had traveled 1,900 miles before the wheel came loose.

Car accidents like these are entirely preventable. Drivers should make a habit of checking wheels, mirrors and mufflers to ensure they are properly attached. While the driver of a vehicle may not be found liable if a wheel comes loose and injures someone, that driver will still have to live with the knowledge that someone was hurt in a preventable accident.
