Haverhill Man Dies in Fall at Construction Site

A 41-year-old Haverhill worker died in a construction site accident on December 18 after he fell into an open elevator shaft. The man, identified only as an employee of Progressive Roofing, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency responders were called to the site at 98 Essex Street just before 10:20 AM. Federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) investigators are working with Massachusetts State Police and local police to investigate the accident.

The multi-story factory building where the accident occurred was previously home to Shoe and Leather Associates. Peabody Properties is renovating the building to create affordable housing, with an expected completion date in Summer 2019.

OSHA data from 2017 revealed that falls were a leading cause of construction site accidents. OSHA cited fall protection more often than any other violation in construction accident investigations last year.
